All over the Guy - a Movie Review

I ended up hearing about this one as a recommendation from a friend. I had never heard of it before, but I am glad I tried it out. It is a romantic comedy with a same-sex relationship twist.

A furniture designer named Brett meets a girl named Jackie who comes into his shop and they quickly hit it off, though she thinks he is gay at first. In the process, they each mention having a gay friend, and they end up setting the two guys up in the hopes that it might help create a bond between them.

Eli, played by the playwright who originally created the story in the form of I Know You Are, But What Am I? and adapted it to a screenplay, is the guy who edits the police blotter so it can be a story in the local paper. He is ready for a serious relationship, but is having trouble finding Mr. Right. Thanks to the shared friends mentioned above, he is set up with Tom, a special education teacher who is a bit leery of long-term relationships. The two quickly become close, but things fall apart quickly.

For the most part Eli and Tom are the ones telling the story in flashback. Ever-careful Eli is off to get the results of an AIDS test, which he always does after a relationship ends, and befriends the older, sassy receptionist who starts up a conversation about the whole thing because he is an hour early. Tom, starts telling his side of things to a guy he meets at AA.

By the time they each get to the end of the stories, it is clear that each of the guys is still really interested in the other. They will have another chance when the friends who set them up get married. They have each been invited and are worried about what might happen when they see each other again. The question is whether each of them can get past their own baggage and the hurt they feel so they can find true love.

I have always been a sucker for romantic comedies, so this one quickly pulled me in. It is sweet and cute, but not totally without the sense of realism, which can be found in a lot of cheesy romantic comedies. I actually liked it so much that I just ordered it so I could have my own copy.
