Gross Toenail Fungus

Well, I am going to bet that you are all thrilled that I have not used an actual photograph of this for the blog's illustration. I didn't want to gross you out.

I seem to have developed a weird fungus on one of my pinky toes. I am not sure how it started, but it has become quite annoying. It has actually ended up pushing up the toenail so that it hurts when I am wearing shoes. I findally decided to break down and try and get some treatment for it.

I know that there are some prescription medication to deal with such a thing, but I have also heard all sorts of horror stories about the side effects of such meds so I know I really don't want to go down that road.

Instead, I decided that I wanted to try something over the counter and something that was topical rather than oral. Ray really kindly decided to check out the necessary product at CVS in order to provide some relief for my discomfort. He picked up some anti-fungal liquid that is applied by a little mini-applicator, which is better known as a brush. I use that to spread the stuff on the ickiness under the nail.

So far, it seems to be doing a pretty good job. I have been using it for a couple of days, it already seems to be putting a dent on things ... literally! It is made up of 12.5% of undecylenic acid. I am assuming that means it is literally burning away the nasty fungus. I am not sure that I care too much about what it is made up of as long as it is working.

For those of you interested, this stuff can be used to treat r"ingwordm and athlete's foot so as to relieve itching, scaling, cracking, burning, redness, soreness, irritation and discomfort which may accompany these conditions." So far, so good. Hopefully, my toenail will be back to normal before I know it.

Well, AJ, that was a delightful piece to read. I so enjoyed it. Now, as I'm preparing to go to bed to enter dreamland, I wonder what influence your post will have. Oh, well, that's for me to deal with and I'm sure I'll be fine. As for you, keep applying medicine even when it appears to be all better...anything that might be remaining will only flare up again. Vinegar is good to soak that toe in after the meds stops, just do it before putting on your socks in the morning and before going to bed. Ray won't mind, he'll think you're taking a salad to bed.

If it isn't cleared up in a week, make an appointment with a podiatrist. the specialize in feet. It could save your toe. Fungi are very common and fast spreading. Soak your feet and wear clean socks. Wash with some Lysol in the washer, or use 10% solution of clorox in 90 % water. See a foot Doc. Money well spent! Believe me, I know from feet! Take this very seriously.
Cheers, stephy

AJ, my husband had the same thing several years ago and had to take prescription medication for it. I can't remember the name of it but it is very hard on the liver and requires monitoring. He had no problems and the fungus is gone.

If you are going to use a topical product, be sure to continue to use it long after it is visibly "cured", or at least change to a product that will both destroy fungi and inhibit its growth. I think Lotrimin makes a topical foot product. What a weird post, may I add? The title did get my attention!
