Gamer Girl by Mari Mancusi

Maddy's life is full of change right now. Her parents have recently gotten a divorce. As a result, she, along with her mom and her sister, has had to move out of Boston and in with Maddy's grandmother in small-town New Hampshire. On top of that, she has had to switch schools in the middle of the year.

In her old school, she had a great group of friends and a clearly established persona. Things get off to a troublesome first day at school when her grandmother refuses to let her go to school in one of her own outfits. Instead, she is stuck wearing her grandmother's old-person jeans and a unicorn t-shirt. You can only guess how that went over.

The "in-crowd," led by one Billy, has targeted her and has dubbed her Freak Girl. Besides teasing her, they play all sorts of pranks on her. She feels totally alone both at school and at home, particularly since her friends from her old school seem to be blowing off her emails and phone calls.

Things start to change when her birthday comes around and gives her Fields of Fantasy, an on-line roleplaying game that is just like World of Warcraft. She thinks it will give her an opportunity to spend some online time playing with her dad, but it doesn't turn out that way. After creating her on-line persona, an elfin princess with magical powers named Allora, she starts to explore and meets SirLeo, a nice guy her own age. Before long they are having a good time playing the game and become e-pals. The only weird thing is that she might be starting to fall in love with SirLeo. The question is whether he likes him or his on-line persona.

At school, she ends up using her love of manga to start a Manga Club. It is there that she starts to meet a new group of friends and feel like she might actually start to fit in. Her love of manga also allows her to explore her drawing skills, which gives her an opportunity to participate in a graphic novel contest.

I know that a part of the reason that I liked this one so much is that I love playing World of Warcraft so I could really connect with both the game and how it helps the players make friends with people all over the world. I was also thrilled with the fact that the book didn't fall into the usual trap of making it seem like teens can't explore the Internet without being drawn into the trap of dangers that are on there. It is really about her dealing with her trouble at home and at school while gaining confidence in the person she is.

It is a quick read, but it is also fun and has a strong set of characters that are faced with a lot of the problems that today's everyday teens are confronted with.
