Forgetting Sarah Marshall - a Movie Review

Peter Bretter is crushed when his superstar girlfriend Sarah Marshall, the star of a CSI-like television show that Peter writes the music for, decides to dump him because she thinks he is too much of a homebody. Peter falls into a pit of depression until his brother talks him into getting away from it all by going on a vacation. He opts to go to Hawai'i.

He quickly settles into the beauty and fun that can be found on the islands, things quickly turn around in the other directions when Sarah and her new boyfriend arrive for a getaway of their own. Aldous, the boyfriend, is a shallow and oversexed rockstar.

Fortunately for Peter, he meets Rachel, a hostess at his hotel with whom he slowly builds a friendship that seems to start heading into the romantic arena as they spend time together.

As the movie starts, it is a bit off. I am not really sure how to describe why. It is not that the acting is terrible. I think the problem is that the writing and the lines in the early portion are a bit cheesy. Once the story really gets going, the movie quickly shifts into being a pretty good romantic comedy. The question is whether people will stick through the "off" parts to get to the rest of the movie.

Just a quick warning, though, for those of you who like cozy romantic comedies. This is definitely not one of those. There is no shortage of crass comedy .. the big "UNRATED" you see on the cover is there for a reason. Think about American Pie, and you will be prepared for the low-brow humor that is in evidence throughout.

On a side note, I really loved the idea that Peter was working hard trying to write a musical based on Dracula.
