These are my out-of-laws, big Ray and Cil, Ray's parents
Ray's father has been going round and round with the doctors since his most recent heart attack in April. There has been an ongoing debate about whether or not he could survive a bypass surgery and even if certain blockages were too entrenched to make it worthwhile. Doctors from Rhode Island and Boston were consulted with some even refusing to consider surgery since they thought he would just die on the table.
The initial plan was to do triple bypass, on top of a previous quadruple bypass from about 15 years ago. That would have required him on a heart and lung machine, which was not considered to be a good option.
Today, he went in for surgery today. The result was going to be a single bypass procedure with a follow up procedure shortly to implant some stents where needed. He has been really in a funk lately. I guess when enough doctors are too afraid to work on you for fear you will die, it will give you a bit of a complex.
So far, everything seems to have gone really well. He has already had the oxygen tube removed, and the doctors seem to agree that all is going really well. Everything seems to be going according to plan.
Ray seems to be taking the whole thing in stride, which is good. In fact, he seemed more panicky about Belle's surgery than his dads. That was not due to a lack of closeness between them since they normally see each other every day. I know that I had a feeling things would go well.
On a bright, note, big Ray wanted us to tape The Bold and the Beautiful. That means that even if he had his doubts about how the surgery would go, he felt he was going to get to see the episode.
