Coober Pedy is a town in northern South Australia, 846 kilometres north of Adelaide on the Stuart Highway. According to the 2011 census, its population was 1,695 (953 males, 742 females, including 275 indigenous Australians).[1] The town is sometimes referred to as the "opal capital of the world" because of the quantity of precious opals that are mined there. Coober Pedy is renowned for its below-ground residences, called "dugouts", which are built due to the scorching daytime heat. The name 'Coober Pedy' comes from the local Aboriginal term kupa-piti, which means 'white man's hole'.[

That's incredible! I wonder if I'd feel claustrophobic with no windows? I LOVE opals.
I'd like to stumble across one of those opals while out walking around.
Oh yeah, I think I saw it featured in a TV program. Pretty cool!
I looked into buying a US government surplus underground bunker once. But I bought a local above ground motel instead. Guess I blew it.
oh!did I missed out on the opal?what do I know.To die for not sure.I have my turquoise and that is good enough for me.Loved to spend some time there.
Can I get a 1 bedroom house please!! Like most tourists to Australia I HAD to buy an opal ring--still have it!
I have seen these houses on HGTV. The opals are to die for.
Famous (or infamous) place. Still going strong, eh?
I wouldn't mind visiting there, especially if I found a few opals!
