General Motors

Elizabeth South Australia has since 1948 had General motors America called here as General Motors Holden producing motor vehicles for local and export . For the past few years the federal and local governments have been subsidising with millions of dollars to keep the factory open .
Mitsubishi also had a factory here as well but closed it down a few years back. Ford in Melbourne are shutting down in 2016 , now we have Holden saying they are considering shutting down also if things do not improve .
The C E O of GM is in Australia meeting with government officials and union secretaries to find a way to keep operating till at least 2022. First off they have asked union members to take a two year wage freeze , then they offered redundancy payments for those wishing to retire to cut the work force down .
Union members in SA voted to accept the agreement and now are waiting for those in Victoria where a smaller plant operates to vote as well , now the SA government have offered millions of dollars to Holden in support if they stay here in Elizabeth .
We certainly don't need another Detroit here with car making, its not only Holden at stake its all the local suppliers as well

Auto manufacturers were saved. The parts of Detroit that aren't dead are dying and the revitalization isn't taking root.

was reading an article about Detroit, then I posted what is happening here , if they close will create a lot of unemployment and house values will come down as well.
there are other factories in this area that supply parts to Holden will shut down as well

"yes mate we aren't that backwards" I know that sir but I was wondering if ti was affordable, efficient and accessible to all of the city.

yes mate are public transport operators that you can use that you can catch 25 miles north from city centre-- change-- and another will take you 30 miles south , others from the sea to up into the hills.
recently commuters complained about one service continually running late , they got a warning from the government to change or risk losing the contract . they were fined and lost the contract for not improving.

I hope you can keep the auto plants. When one industry goes belly up, it takes many others lower down on the totem pole down.

As global transportation improves, the world gets smaller and manufacturers think nothing of shipping thousands of cars overseas. It's a shame because profits have taken precedence over people being able to make a living.

agree with you on that , tariffs should be higher on imported cars , local companies and government depts. should be made to buy , lease Australian made cars .

Is there government transportation in those areas?

yes mate we aren't that backwards here in the city of Adelaide , electric trains have just been put in and our buses run on natural gas

Detroit was saved by government intervention and the car industry, due to that aid that was demonized by right wing fascists, is now thriving and repaid the loan. Repaid it. I thought that bore repeating. I hope things work out for the car industry in Australia.

labor government offering to assist with subsidies to help to keep plants going , liberal government removing whet help they already have , trouble is we have federal elections next month and labour is trailing in the polls
