Following the Herd

Sometimes we inevitably find out that there is only so much a human being can stand when it comes to being an individual. Every minute of every day no matter how hard you stare at yourself in the mirror trying to convince yourself that you are a bright and shining star the fact always remains that in truth you are constantly feeling the pull of the herd at all times. This instinct is not an accident because it made civilization possible. However the instinct to want to go along with the group is one that leaders throughout history have used to gather people around banners and the ideas and ideals that they choose to endorse. There isn’t a person alive who wants to be a leader for totally selfless reasons and hat includes all of them down to the Buddha and Jesus Christ.

Sometimes a person becomes aware of the desire to go along instead of get along and they realize how damaging it is to one’s sense of self. It’s inevitability really when you think about it. If you possess a working mind at all or have a scrap of individuality within you there is going to be a time in your life when the fact that you are giving up what you want and need at the expense of those around you.

A lot of you may be wondering why someone like me, who does what I do is going on about individuality and freedom in the face of surmountable and unavoidable odds. Slaves don’t choose to serve someone because it is painful for them, even though that is usually part of it. They choose to serve someone because it is the ultimate defiance of the game plan of everyone else. By picking who they choose to serve they take away the power of those around them to exploit them. That is a basic fact of human interaction. Every time that you even talk to someone else or as simply as greet someone in the morning human beings are constantly taking from one another. In any given situation someone is going to be the consumer and the other is going to be the consumed. In a thousand little ways everyone knows that the desire to please many is the desire to see yourself annihilated and what slavery does is focus all of your energy and time lifting up someone who you feel with all your hear and soul deserves it and with a little luck, makes sure that you get what you need out of the arrangement as well.
