Sparky is Sick Again ...

image
Trying to work through this. Sparky hid all day yesterday. This morning I got him and put him in a cat bed near this desk. He has the UTI again and bad.I talked to the vets and took him in just before ten a.m. Dr, brothers examined him and Sparky's bladder was hard as hell and the size of an apple. This is his third UTI episode.
The diagnosis is UTI and severe. Prognosis is chronic. He is at a crossroads. There are three options:
1. Continue taking him to the hospital every couple months and have a catheter inserted, then medication. This option will wear out as it affects his ability to pee at all eventually and is probably going to result in renal failure.
2. Surgery to remove external urinary parts and redirect the urinary method directly via his urethra so he can evacuate ate will, much like a female mechanism.I had this done with a cat, Trotsky, in California in 1978 and he lived to a ripe old age. It is expensive but allows the cat to live without the pain and recurrent UTI problems.
3. The final solution. I do not want this option and will not do it. My conscience will not allow it. I won't have Sparky terminated.

He is at the vet. Doctor Mike has by now put him on a catheter. I asked them to call me with the estimate.

More when I know.

for your future consideration, should it come up again, Science Diet wet food is horrible. Sniffy loved the dry food and shunned the wet food. One time I fooled him by sprinkling fish flakes on top and he ate it, went around the house burping all day and finally threw up.

Surgery will be Monday.

My cat Sniff had urinary blockage and the treatment, following the catheter insertion that saved his life, was to change his diet to one that is PH balanced. Science Diet has one -- I think it is called the WD diet. Did the vet discuss the PH situation? Sniff lived many years without further problems of that kind.

We have tried dietary changes. We used Science Diet for a while but they wouldn't eat it after a couple feedings. Then they left it in the bowls all day and it rotted and a couple ate at it when they were starving and they puked. So, since I cannot discriminate between or among the ten cats as to who eats what, we quit using it. I have no way of isolating a cat and feeding that cat separately. They get ten bowls at a time and it is first come, first serve.
Sparky's UTI is stress-caused, according to the vets. The surgery will eliminate the blockages. We did this with Trotsky in 1978 in California and it was the perfect solution. He lived 9 more years.
