A hill town in the north of Tuscany, Castel di San Gimignano, (Pr: "Jim-in-yahno.") is only a short drive southwest of Florence, overlooking the Arno River valley. During the Middle Ages wealthy merchant families constructed their houses with high towers built for defense. The town is known for this. Jealousy was a reason that the towers kept growing taller, as one family just had to out-do another.
The town is a tourist center in summer. It is a grand place to visit with several excellent restaurants and a great market.
This painting has been underway for a few weeks. It will feature the town in the background and olive groves and vineyards on the slopes and in the unfinished foreground. The canvas is 24 inches wide and 18 inches tall.
