"Put a dress on them," someone remarked. The speaker was referring to NFL quarterbacks. With yesterday's rule change, that's exactly what the league did.
From now on the defenders cannot tackle a quarterback. At least they can't hit one below the knees or above the shoulders.
The owner of the Patriots likes the new rule. Of course he does, because it will be called the "Brady" Rule. Tom Brady, the Pats' QB was put out of his last season due to a low tackle.
Mike Golic of ESPN doesn't like the rule. Mike and his brother were both NFL defense players and loved going after the quarterbacks.
Who is right here?
The fans should decide, and so far they have:
USA TODAY's poll has 83 percent against the "Brady" Rule and only 8 percent in favor.
But this is the NFL. Since when does the NFL care about what the fans think?
Furthermore...
These guys make millions to go out on the grass or the carpet on Sunday, Monday or Thursday and play sixteen games over a four or five month schedule. These guys are not John Madden cartoons on a computer or TV monitor. These guys are supposed to earn their pay. It is a hard-hitting game. It is what the fans come to see.
Let them play. Let them take the hits. It is what the fans shell out their hard-earned cash to see.
The league should stop screwing with the game and instead figure out a way to keep their damn ticket prices within reason.
