A Letter from My Friend Bob Ca.9/11

Hi! want to share with you and Mike on this.

Curious recalling 9/11 this year. Perhaps it's because of so much coverage in the press and on TV, but it really seems much more vivid this year. Brings back memories of Bob and I being in New York over Thanksgiving 2001, and particularly having Thanksgiving dinner at Flaunces Tavern down in the financial district. I remember it being still dirty and dusty on the streets and buildings. Dirty and dusty was what I thought at the time - only later did it strike me that much of that 'dust' and 'dirt' was from the towers and some of that 'dust' was from people that had been in the buildings. Also remembering smoke still coming from the site, although a few weeks after the event. And the pieces of surrounding buildings that had been torn away. And so many police and security everywhere, and all the flowers and memorials around the fire station that was around the corner on 8th Ave from where we were staying. That station had lost more firemen than any other in New York. And then all the notes and pictures on fences around the site as memorials to lost friends and family, and particularly notes and pictures of the missing that friends and family were desperately trying to find. But then there was meeting some folks that thanked us for coming to New York and telling us how they felt, and also finding that several personal friends that live and work in New York were all ok. So many recollections that have not gone away after 10 years. Some things should not be forgotten I think.

Thanks for listening to the memories and have a peaceful day today.

Bob

You were ten on Pearl Harbor day and I was twelve but I'll never forget where
I was and what shock I felt. It was the first time I realized that America
was vulnerable.

Wish I could be there on this day. Ed and I were in our Queens apartment and I left to go into the city for my ballet class. I knew an aircraft had struck the building but had no idea how major the event would become. I couldn't get home after class, of course, because all the subways were stopped so I hung out at a friend's apartment. The tragedy enveloped all parts of the city like a fog.

Can't believe it's already been ten years. Seems more recent....

Time moved on and guess a lot of us cannot believed that it was ten years ago.

What a touching memory, more so because it's describes the type of experience most of us would have had if we'd gone there.

I really hope that 60 years from now 9/11 doesn't become a one line in the newspaper as Pearl Harbor Day has become

Your right Martin about Pearl Harbor. Many of them out there do not know anything about Pearl Harbor,or any of the other war that we had.
