Leonardo DiCaprio really must have a thing for history. The actor has arguably played more real-life characters than any of his peers, and, by the time his career is over, he might play more of them than any major movie star in history. His most prominent role was that of Howard Hughes in the Oscar-nominated "The Aviator," but he has also portrayed author Tobias Wolff ("This Boy's Life"), poets Arthur Rimbaud ("Total Eclipse") and Jim Carroll ("The Basketball Diaries"), and the misunderstood genius counterfeiter Frank Abagnale Jr. ("Catch Me If You Can"). Plus, he's also attached to films in the works about convicted stockbroker Jordan Belfort and James Bond creator Ian Fleming. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, DiCaprio is aligning himself with yet another historical figure: Nolan Bushnell, the man behind Atari and one of the founding fathers of the video game industry.

Currently titled, um, "Atari," Brian Hecker and Craig Sherman's pitch (which means there isn't a finished screenplay) chronicles Bushnell's rise from a game-loving pinball wiz to launching Atari Corporation, a video game manufacturer that made millions of dollars with its first release, the iconic "Pong." The company was sold to Warner Communications (parent company of Warner Bros. at the time) in 1976 for a not-too-shabby $28 million. Unfortunately, Bushnell was eventually forced out of his own company (there's Act 2), but that only allowed him more time to focus on his other ventures, including, in all seriousness, Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza-Time Theaters. DiCaprio's Appian Way production company will produce the biopic that they hope will combine elements of "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" and "Tucker: The Man and His Dream."

The 33-year-old actor will obviously have to decide which historical figure to play next (Bushnell, Belfort or Fleming), but in the meantime he's working on a number of pictures heading to theaters. DiCaprio hasn't been seen onscreen since 2006's "Blood Diamond," but he'll return in October with Ridley Scott's drama "House of Lies" and follow that up at Christmas with the long-awaited reunion with his "Titanic" co-star, Kate Winslet, in Sam Mendes' "Revolutionary Road." Currently, DiCaprio is shooting his fourth film with Martin Scorsese, the thriller "Shutter Island," opposite Ben Kingsley and Mark Ruffalo.
