St. Bernadette

On 11th February, 1858, a 14 year old French peasant girl, Bernadette Soubirous, claimed to have seen visions of the Virgin Mary at her native Lourdes.

She also revealed that the waters of a spring near a grotto in Lourdes had been given healing powers by the Virgin.

Eventually, the Roman Catholic church decided that the visions were authentic.

Franz Werfel wrote the novel, ‘Song of Bernadette’, based on the story of Bernadette's visions.

Bernadette was canonized December 8, 1933.

I hope that they were the context that Jeri needed. I was interested in this too, as I had often wondered about 'Lourdes'. I had posted this article as it was the anniversary of Bernadette having the vision.

I loved the book and the movie. I need to know something. I read a lot
of English novels and please tell me the difference between whingeing and
whining. I have a faint idea of what grizzling means but please explain.

Okey dokey, I will attempt to explain:
'Whinging' =. It can be used in a variety, of occasions. Let us imagine I am having a conversation with my husband. I make a comment to him about my purchasing a 'home hair colouring kit' (which I buy on a regular basis(I can do this, because 'I save my pennies' for it'). My husband then replies to me: 'How can I always afford' to buy something, when I can't'? - I never buy things for my self as havent got enough money . . .
Now when you consider, that this same conversation can happen quite regularly with the same 'bemoaning' his woes - this, can be described as 'Whinging' - it is not a 'Nag', more a 'half dig' at me (or whoever is on the receiving end).
'Whining' =. This is used more to describe a child, but again 'anyone' can whine. Imagine this: A child who has just had a birthday/Christmas and his parents bought him 'tons' of gifts (fulfilling all his 'wish list' and more). The child watches the tv and sees a 'new' toy on the market - he asks his parents for it. They say no, they can't afford it and he had plenty of things not long ago. The child 'keeps on and on and on' about 'whyyy? he can't have it' - this contiues every single time the child sees this ad on tv. This is 'Whining' (and it is blinking annoying tooooo lol).
'Grizzling' =. (I am assuming, that you are refering to this situation). You have a baby about 14 months of age. He is probably a tad sleepy but wont give in to actually 'falling asleep'. He lays down in his cot ond doesn't let out a 'fully fledged' cry, but prefers to lay there 'grizzling' - making similar noises of crying, but not quite. Nothing you can do will pacify him (you have obviously, checked that there nothing 'wrong' with him health-wise - and diaper wise too lol)) The baby is happy just having a 'moan' (a grizzle) to himself.
I hope this has helped you. Novels by an English author, I imagine, must be a difficult 'read' in some occasions as there are so many, varying descriptions of something that often, have a use in another context.
Moreover, there are a lot of 'new' words entering the dictionaries now. 'Ish', for example, this is a suffix which has been entering our 'spoken' language for quite a time now - I use it a lot. Now, it has been entered into the Oxford Dictionary as a word e.g. "I did, like her dress - ish . . ."
Come to think of it Jeri, I need to update my dictionary - badly!
