The Aberfan Diaster

I was still living in London at this time. My sister was already married and had two young children and she worked part-time.

To enable her to carryon working through the 'half-term' holiday from school, she had asked me to stay with them in order to look after the children. (I too, had been on the school 'break').

My sister arrived home from work about 12.30pm and switched the tv on to hear about the disaster that had befallen a small village from our Welsh homeland.

My sister watched an cried, as the full extent of the disaster broke.

I don't remember it. How tragic.

It was such an awful thing. I was only about 12 years old when it happened. Obviously, I did realize the tragedy of it, but I don't think I appreciated, the full 'horror' until I was a mother myself. I know that the kiddies involved only had a 'mornings' lessons to attend that day - I have often wondered if those little children had asked their mother if they could have that morning off from school that day - I know 'my' little ones would have. I think that would totally screw you up
