I think it is especially poignant on your side of the big pond because real estate got destroyed and civilians killed and scarcer resources.

This is so true. It wasn't just London that saw the bombing (although it was very, severe). The whole of Britain also inundated with sporadic bombardments. The ports around the country were victimized and subsequently the towns and cities too.
Near here in Bridgend, there was a P.O.W. camp. Whilst my mother was still living in Wales with my brother & sister quite small and my father repairing the bomb damage in London (he was a master builder). There was an escape from the camp. My mum was living in a small farmhouse up the mountain and she was so terrified of 'what could be', that she left Wales to be with my father. (Th escapees, were eventually caught, I believe). Got to have been 'scary' though.
