Comics Way to Go
Way to go
Should Gerard Way ever want to give up his day job as the front man of US rock band My Chemical Romance, then the comics industry would be lucky to have him, if The Umbrella Academy is anything to go by. Way's sardonic take on the superhero team is a fabulously pulpy, mock-Gothic affair. Leavened with dry wit and a gangbusters pace, it follows the disbanded Academy (made up of superpowered children who are collected at birth and trained to combat an unspecified global threat) as they reunite to complete their late adoptive father's plans. With a style reminiscent of Mike Mignola (Hellboy), Gabriel Bá infuses Way's tale with a cracking dynamism and some wonderful character designs.
