Madonna has been named in divorce papers filed by the wife of Alex Rodriguez, the American baseball player the singer is said to have been enjoying an intimate friendship with. In papers supporting the legal $275m suit, Rodriguez is accused of being unfaithful and "emotionally abandoning his wife and children". It also claims that the sportsman has been "brainwashed" by the pop star's mystical Kabbalah religion.
The court papers say: "The marriage of the parties is irretrievably broken because of the husband's extramarital affairs and other marital misconduct". A lawyer acting for Cynthia Rodriguez, crassly using the title of one Madonna's songs and a few random cliches, claimed that Rodriguez's relationship with 'The Material Girl' was "the straw that broke the camel's back".
This straw was apparently a letter Cynthia Rodriguez found in which her husband - nicknamed 'A-Rod' and more recently 'Stray Rod' - told Madonna: "You are my true soulmate." A friend of his wife told the New York Daily News: "This all started with Kaballah. Alex told Cynthia... that he'd been looking for his soulmate. And now, he said, he'd found her."
Madonna denies having an affair with Rodriguez and is herself battling reports of trouble in her marriage to director Guy Ritchie. In a new tell-all book, her brother, Christopher Ciccone, reportedly claims that his sister's seven-year marriage is only held together by a trusted rabbi who makes house calls to act as counsellor.
