1953 Pick Up on South Street
Richard Widmark steals a microfilm from the purse of Jean Peters. Neither one knows the film contains military secrets stolen by the Communists.
A G-man witnesses Richard’s theft, but holds off on the arrest in order to identify the leader of the Red spy ring. They work for the man known as Uncle Joe Stalin, who stole the secrets to the A-bomb. Nobody needed a road map to finger him as a great villain even small time crooks and pickpockets.
Today, the spy rings are more complicated. Israeli graduate students sell nuclear secrets to the FBI that passes them to the State Department. The Turks distribute them to Third World buyers that include Pakistan, Iran, Libya and North Korea.
In 2004 a Pakistani scientist admitted to being the father of the Muslim A-bomb. The authorities put him under house arrest in his mansion, but nothing prevents him from spreading his expertise.
