Suburban Wildlife

Did I mention all the wildlife that come to my yard in the Chicago northwest suburbs? Night before last, I was driving home about 11 and a skunk was crossing the road in front of my car. We routinely have squirrels and rabbits and chipmunks living in our yards. Raccoons and possums come from the field across from my street. A coyote and a fox, too. I have an apple tree outside my bedroom window and usually I have a lot of apples to pick up off the ground in the fall. This year my motion detector light quit working and there were no apples left on the ground. Sneaky critters cleaned up my yard under cover of darkness. I slept through it all.

We get noisy frogs in the spring-peepers and chorus frogs. Chorus frogs sound like a thumb being run across a comb.

Wow! I had no idea a yard light would deter the animals. I'm wondering what the beavers would think about a motion detector light over there at Bucky Dam.

A couple of years ago Bucky et al started showing up in the late afternoon, as if there weren't enough dark night hours to do all the damage to our trees that he had in mind. So we see quite a bit of him, and he doesn't get much sleep. I think it'd be fun to rig up some motion lights so we knew he was repairing the dam and we could run out there. I want to see him moving those big 10 pound rocks.

I had no idea that beavers were nocturnal until I looked them up. They used to be diurnal until hunters forced them to change to survive. With a motion detector light you could watch them at work even if the light didn't chase them away.

I'll compare our night life with yours anytime--like right now the, literally, thousands of frogs croaking!!!
