Hazelnuts

I am looking out the window at a beautiful sunny day. Usually I can't see out that window because there are hazelnut bushes right outside but those leaves have fallen. It seemed like a good idea to plant the hazelnuts. I like hazelnuts (filberts); unfortunately,so do the squirrels. I find the hulls all over the yard. I have yet to get any to eat. The bushes are taller than the windows (12 feet), so they make a nice screen and help keep the side of the house cool in the summer. It just seems odd when the leaves fall and I see that there is a house right next door. It has only been there for 40 years, but out of sight, out of mind, right?
The snow is skipping over us and heading to the east coast. I am fine with that. We still have leaves that haven't fallen and I have to mow one more time and clean up the garden. So much to do; so little time. I need to to quit living in front of the computer. How did I have more time when I worked?

I'm not sure if I know what hazelnuts taste like. I've been cracking butternuts (from a friend). Plus we have hickory nuts (and the ever present black walnuts). I'll google them. Occasionally, I'll find an oblong, oval nut in my wood pile. I never have figured out where they come from. Maybe it's a hazelnut. Ah, the mysteries of life!

You probably have had hazelnuts and didn't know it. If you have ever eaten mixed nuts, hazelnuts, also known as filberts, are the small round ones. A friend has black walnuts. I love them, but they are a lot of messy work to get to the good stuff. I had an aunt who made pies with butternuts. She lived on a farm on Spoon River in central IL. Yes, that Spoon River. Edgar Lee Master Anthology. It is a real place.

I bought three small bushes that started bearing after two years. The bushes are huge now and bearing lots of nuts but the squirrels get them all. Hazelnut bushes grow in the tallgrass prairies.

I'm not a hazelnut lover but just to show you what a nice guy I am I'll eat whatever extras you have!

You will have to fight the squirrels and they are very fast.

I had no idea hazelnuts grew on bushes instead of trees, so I googled it to see how long it takes for them to produce, and came upon this article: https://news.minnesota.publicradio.org/features/2003/12/26_hemphills_hazelnuts/ - go down to where there is a picture with the caption "A 12-year-old hazelnut bush" - where he talks about the squirrels. Very funny.

Thanks for the link. That farmer is going to have very well fed squirrels with all those bushes.
