It seems that the sun rises a little earlier here and the birds start celebrating the new day around 5:00am.
It snowed the first week of May while I was away so looking out now at my perennial gardens and seeing the lush and full swamp ferns and hosta lilies, it seems miraculous.
Nature sure can hit "fast forward" and make up for lost time.
I haven't had trouble adjusting to the sudden heat and humidity here - coming home from southern latitudes - only the wet and damp that still remains in the ground from all the snow we had over winter makes the bones complain.
The hot days of June and July will take care of that.
One thing, however, I do notice here - BUGS!
The termites and earwhigs and no-see-ums were kept at bay down south but here the mosquitoes are having a hayday!
The black flies might already have peaked due to the high temps of the past week. And that's fine with me.
This past weekend we packed up and spent the weekend at the family cottage to celebrate J's birthday.
The weather was fine.
The ice has only been entirely off the lake since early May but that didn't stop me from taking a dip.
The surface water is warming up nicely but underneath it's still chilly.

As I stood waist deep the fresh cool lake water I paused to think how fortunate I was to be here and that just a few days ago I stood in the perpetually moving salt water of the ocean.
So different yet I got the same feeling of awe and wonder.
At the lake I can see clear across to the other side but gazing out to sea, I can only try to imagine the distant shore - perhaps as far away as Africa!

Fresh water lakes are mostly placid and still (they do have their bad days though!) whereas the ocean is in constant motion - showing off its power and immensity.
So now having been in both fresh and salt water, I'll sit on the back deck, dreaming of both, and watching and listening to my own body of water - the creek at the end of my yard as it flows by - offering the best of both worlds - fresh water tumbling - sounding somewhat like the ocean rushing to the shore.
