No... that is not my age. lol That is the number of living calves born on the ranch as of tonight. We lost one or it would be seventeen.
I'm excited. They all seem to be doing well. I have a couple that I am slightly concerned about, but I don't think they are big concerns. The monster calf is nursing and was jumping around today. Momma is still a terror. To get in the corral with her would be suicide.
Another calf is not nursing as much as I would like to see. Also, the mom has one teet that may have mastitis. It is swollen to a huge size. The calf is nursing on the back two quarters. I may have to get that cow in and milk out that teet and treat it with medicine. Hope not... it is a big job!!!!
The calves are a joy to watch. They run all around chasing one another. Their tails are high in the air. Sometimes, they butt each other or act like bucking bulls. Amazingly, we have a high number of female calves. Usually, we end up with about half and half, with the males being in the majority. The calves are mostly white in color. One is a charcoal grey and one is the color of a deer. That red angus gene came out in that one.
So much for the latest on the ranch.
