My friend Jane had an ankle replacement a few weeks ago and is still in a wheelchair but Carl drove her and the Horribles (Welsh Corgis) up here for a visit. She brought the makings for a cherry pie - the most important was the sour cherries from a tree in their yard.
Carl went fishing while Jane and I pitted those cherries and chatted and chatted some more while it baked and finished up chatting while it cooled. Then we all had a piece and they loaded up the dogs and went home.
It has been a lot of years since I've had a home-made pie made with fresh cherries. We used to be able to buy 5-gallon buckets of pitted frozen cherries. Thawed out a little bit, we could put them in smaller containers and re-freeze them.
It was a fun way to spend a warm afternoon.
