The Foothills Animal Shelter (Colorado) is allowing online visitors to play with its cats via the Internet.
The shelter has installed a system called iPet Companion.
It allows people to use their computers to control a webcam focused on the cats, as well as robotic toys. When online users click on a toy, the computer sends a signal to a controller in the room that will shake the toy, hopefully inciting the nearby cats to play. However, when 7NEWS employees tried out the system, the cats ignored the toys.
Shelters in Los Angeles, Idaho, Dallas, Michigan and several other cities have also installed the systems. Officials with iPet Companion said the goal is to increase adoptions of homeless cats. The system can be purchased for cats for $345.95 or dogs for $395.
