You never know with a title like this one whether the dogs did the rescuing or were rescued. In this case they were rescued from a mountain in Colorado's Summit County.
From Denver's Channel 7 news:
" Members of the Summit County Rescue Group like to say there is no such thing as a "typical" rescue mission.
Take for example the case on July 25 when rescuers had to remove two dogs, along with their Broomfield caretakers, who got stuck on Quandary Peak.
The man and woman hikers, both fairly experienced, hiked up the west ridge of Quandary Peak, which is more than 14,000 feet tall, said Tracy LeClair of the Summit County Sheriff's Office. On the way down, they took a wrong turn and ended up "cliffed out" at the edge of an approximately 200-foot-high vertical drop, said Mark Watson, SCSO special operations technician.
The couple's backpack, which had their grear, food and water, fell over the edge of the cliff, Watson said.
Then a storm started moving in. The couple built a rock shelter and spent the night, sharing body heat with each other and their dogs. The next morning, the man was able to hike his way down to their vehicle and call for help, Watson said.
"Rescuers had to scale some very technical terrain in deteriorating weather conditions before they were able to reach the woman and dogs, all of whom were exhausted and dehydrated," LeClair said in a news release.
The woman was able to walk down the mountain, but the dogs were unable to follow.
"Always up for a challenge, two SCRG members emptied the contents of their packs and rappelled down the 200-foot cliff with the dogs, Loki and Lilly, in their packs," LeClair said.
"The Summit County Rescue Group is a team of consummate professionals. This is just one example of their quick thinking and willingness to go beyond expectations and get the job done," said Sheriff John Minor.
Everyone made it down the mountain OK.
