My Hometown Goes Green with Windmill Farm

Oklahoma is in the forefront, having already developed several windmill farms that are already operational. One such farm is just west of Weatherford, my hometown, and the home of Southwestern Oklahoma State University, my alma mater. Below are the comments of one family as they traveled westward on I-40. Though these windmills do not appear large in the photo, they actually are monstrous in size. Each blade is 100' long.

We couldn't help noticing all the wind mills as we were making our way west. We finally came upon this dedication to Oklahoma's wind farms in front of the Weatherford town hall.

Located on more than 5,000 acres in and around Custer and Washita Counties,Oklahoma, the 98 wind turbines produce up to 147 megawatts of electricity. That’s enough electricity for more than 44,000 homes.

You can hunt down all 98 if you have the time and can find your way through all the service drives, or you can come to this dedication where you'll see over a dozen of them from one location (looking southwest from the center) as well as placards full of interesting information.

Oh, and a 100' fiberglass blade running along the ground proves to be a great photo-op.Web-Stat

and the farmers don't have to get up at the crack of dawn to feed or milk them.

Hard to believe the blades a 100' long! I only wish they would make them a little more decorative and not so streamlined. I am sure cost was the deciding factor. The windmills with the mountains in the background make an unusual contrast.

Beautiful! Forward thinking, too. Beats the heck out of putting more carbon into the atmosphere.
