So important is this game that the victor totes home NOT ONE---but FOUR Trophies----
Â

The Golden Hat:
Trophies abound for the winner of tomorrows 11 a.m.(cdt) grudge tilt between those old enemies--the Sooners of Oklahoma and the Longhorns of Texas. Â
The Golden Hat is by far the best known of the three, and the only one to be awarded on the field at the end of the game. The trophy is a gold cowboy hat mounted on a large block of wood.[1][3]
According to The Daily Texan, "...[B]oth teams signed a contract to play in Dallas during the Texas State Fair, beginning with the 1929 season. The deal was for 10 years, but the tradition has carried on for almost a century. To show its gratitude, the fair donated the Golden Hat trophy, a golden replica of a 10-gallon cowboy hat, which the two teams play for every year. The Longhorns won the first Shootout, but since then the Golden Hat has crossed the Red River many times."[4] The trophy was created in 1941. When it was created it was known as the "Bronze Hat" and it was bronze in color. However, when the hat was reworked in the 1970s it came out gold, and is now known as the Golden Hat.[5] OU won last year's game, so the Golden Hat has resided in Sooner Land this past year.
The Golden Hat trophy is kept each year by the winning team's athletic department.
 Red River Shootout trophy
Since 2003 the Red River Rivalry trophy has been exchanged between the student bodies of the two schools.[6] This trophy was developed by Alex Yaffe, former OU Student Body President, and Katie King, UT's former student body president. The trophy bears the image of the two states as well as miniature football helmets to represent both teams.
Governors' trophy
There is also a governors' trophy exchanged between the governors of the two states.[5] The governors of Texas and Oklahoma often place a bet on the game such as the losing governor having to present a side of beef to the winning state governor, who then donates the beef to charity.
 ROTC trophy
Another annual tradition is the running of game balls by the schools' Reserve Officer Training Corps programs.[7] Each school's ROTC program uses a relay running system to run one game ball all the way from their respective campus to Dallas. Once there, they participate against each other in a football scrimmage, with the winner taking home a rivalry trophy and bragging rights.[7] This trophy is awarded to the winner of the scrimmage, without regard to who wins the main football game.
Jokes abound between the two teams as the game nears....here's one Holly e-mailed me today.
Two boys are playing football at this park in a
small town in Oklahoma when one of the boys is suddenly attacked by a crazed
Rottweiler. Â Thinking quickly, the other boy takes a stick and shoves it under
the dog's collar, twists it, and breaks the dog's neck, thus saving his
friend.
A local sports reporter who
was strolling by sees the incident and rushes over to interview the boy. Â He
tells the boy he's going to write the story and says, I'll title it:
"Young Sooner Fan Saves Friend From Vicious
Animal."
"But I'm not a Sooner fan",
the little hero replies.
"Sorry,
since we're in Oklahoma, I just assumed you were", says the reporter, and he
starts writing again. Â He asks, "How does 'OK State Fan Rescues Friend From
Horrific Attack' sound?"
"I'm not an
OSU fan either," Â the boy says.
"Oh,
I thought everyone in Oklahoma was either for the Pokes or the Sooners. Â What
team do you root for?" the reporter asked.
"I'm just visiting my cousin. Â I'm a Texas Longhorn fan" the boy replies.
 ""They're just the best!"
The
reporter smiles, starts a new sheet in his notebook and writes:
"Little Longhorn Bastard
From Texas Kills Beloved Family Pet"
Â
BOOMER SOONER! BOOMER SOONER!
BOOMER SOONER! BOOMER SOONER!
I'M SOONER BORN AND SOONER BRED!
AND WHEN I DIE, I'LL BE SOONER DEAD!
RAH OKLAHOMA! RAH OKLAHOMA!
OKU!!!
