I read so many posts criticizing our politicians and their handling of international as well as domestic issues. I have even written a few myself. I read the op eds that predict doom for our society.
But when I see a young woman born in the former Soviet Union proudly stand as a citizen of this country to receive a gold medal flanked by another receiving the silver but coached by an immigrant Chinese coach, I am reminded that the citizens of the world still regard this as "the home of the brave and the land of the free"
They are willing to leave behind their families, their culture, their sphere of familiarity and their comfort zone for a chance to come to America to pursue a better life.
We are still loved by the people of the world. If you watched the opening ceremonies, that was reinforced by the thunderous applause the Chinese people gave our athletes when they entered the stadium.
Let us not lose sight in our discontent as we struggle with a myriad of problems of how fortunate we really are. People who stand in line for hours to buy food, who have difficulty finding such simple items as Tylenol, who live on $2 a month, whose children die from malaria and dysentery because they cannot afford mosquito nets nor proper medical care, who still are afraid to speak against their government, who cannot worship as they choose, or protest openly, would love to have our problems.
