Adjustments

M (my 7-year old daughter) is having a really hard time adjusting to all the changes going on right now. Since January she's had a broken foot, multiple visits to the dr. for allergies, a new home, a new stepfather, and a new puppy. A lot of those are really good changes but I think she's had all she can handle.

It's interesting because she's using illness to handle a lot of this. As I mentioned we've had lots of visits to the doctor this year. I don't even want to count how many-including two trips to the emergency room. I know that because of her diabetes I overly worry about her health. I think she's figured that out too. After we moved to the new house she started complaining a lot of headaches, her throat hurting. When we went to her family pediatrician he put her on antibiotics for a sinus infection and allergy medicine. The last time she was complaining he put her on a 28-day regimen of antibiotics. The second trip to the e.r. was at a children's hospital where they did a CT scan...no sinus infection.

We came home from visiting J's mom tonight. (Oops, another adjustment-his mom just moved from LA. down here also!) M had a wonderful time visiting with everyone. We walk in the door and she starts crying. Her head hurts. Lots of crying and 30 minutes later she's asleep. This happens every Sunday night.

The Sunday night part of it makes me wonder about school. She's a super student though. Amazingly good grades, the teachers love her. There's a chance she's bored silly, but she's pretty good at finding ways to entertain herself. She doesn't have one really good friend, but she has friends to play with at recess.

I think we will be looking into some counselor visits this summer. I try talking with her but I'm not sure it's the same as talking to a professional. I sure do wish I knew what to do though.

Change is never easy for any of us. I think you are right in that a lot of the changes are good, but it can still be traumatic. Counseling will definitely help.
