A single actor (Ralph Fiennes) portrays father, son and grandson in this epic historical tale that follows a Jewish family as they struggle to survive anti-Semitism, war and corruption in Hungary, and each man deals with the prevailing regime in his own way. Ignatz's business thrives despite a corrupt regime; Adam's assimilation means nothing to the Nazis; and third-generation Ivan's friend Knorr (William Hurt) is branded an agitator for promoting pure communism.
