waiting for the phone to ring
diamond necklace on my shoulder
waiting for the phone to ring
lipstick on my neck and shoulder
it seems to be my fancy
to make it with frank and nancy, well
over the bridge we go
lookin' for love
over the bridge we go
lookin' for love
i'll come running to you
oh baby, if you want me
i,i,i...i'll come running to you now
baby, if you want me
i,i,i,i...
looking at my hands today
look to me that they're made of ivory
had a funny call today
someone died and someone's married
you know that it's my fancy
to make it with frank and nancy, well
over the bridge they go
looking for love
over the bridge we go
looking for love
i'll come running to you now
baby, if you want me
i....i'll come running to you
baby, if you want me
i....i'll come running to you now
baby, if you want me
i....i'll come running to you
baby, if you want me
and something's got a hold on me
it's the beginning of the new age
ohhhhh, it was...
it's the beginning of the new age
can't you save time for yourself
yes, it's the beginning of the new age
oh, you little sick little fucks
yes
it's the beginning of the new age....
On the first cut, Amos aligns herself with the subject - a nude woman wearing only a necklace and mulling over the future. In New Age, she says, "the character is really engulfed in this passion. And I think shes really worried about what the new age is going to be, and shes determined not to sit on the sidelines anymore as it develops. Theres this igniting of passion on the whole record." She continues, "I wanted to have this balmy, undulating rhythm going on... sort of stripped. And thats where the passion was coming from." Amos actually used an early and subsequently altered version of the songs lyrics, which she heard on a Velvet Underground bootleg from the late 60s.
