A lot of us on her talk about what we watch from time to time. I know the Brian is really good about sharing his thoughts about reality TV shows. From time to time, I do the same. Well, it really got me thinking: what does what we watch you you guys about who we are as people, particularly our interests.
Obviously, it tells you basically that we do watch television, which not everyone does. At the same time, there is more to it when you look at what we choose to watch. This is ovciously true when it comes to looking at particular shows, but what about if you consider what networks we watch. Can the same be true??
When I was growing up, there was just the big three network: ABC, CBS, and NBC. Most of us had access to local stations that also carried either older shows or fresh shows that were available in syndication. That all changed with the arrival of stations like CNN and MTV, which predated the major network of FOX, which was really the first to challenge the supremacy of the major networks that showed general televsion shows. UPN and the WB tried to duplicate the success of FOX, but failed. They murged into the CW, which is holding its own as a distant fifth network.
The real interest is in the cable networks, which are generally specialized by genre. That is the kind of networks I was thinking about when I proposed this little sociological theory of mine. Since they usually show stuff that is tied in with their genre, it should be predictive of what we like for fun.
So, I figured I would provide two case studies: Ray and me. What networks do we watch pretty regulalraly? Here is a list, and why don't you tell us what you think it tells you about each of us. The networks are not listed in any order other than alphabetically.
