Things are going pretty well with summer reading. We are in the middle of our second week of the program and i already have 47 young adults signed up for the program. That is a pretty good start since registration will still trickle in for the next few weeks.
They are also off to a great start with reading. They read a total of 33 books in the first week. That is pretty impressive for the first week. I know that doesn't sound like a ton of books, but we usually have the lowest results during the first week.
We had our first week of Book Buddies this week. That is a program where we pair up teen readers with younger readers so they can socialize and give the younger buddies a chance to keep their reading practice going during the months they are not working at school. We have record numbers of teens interested in the program. We actually might have to start turning teens away because we don't have enough younger buddies available to pair them up with.
So far, I am actually pretty excited about how things are going. The only down point is how much I had to spend on buying extra copies of books for the summer reading list here in town. Both the high school and middle school made major changes so I had to order $1,800 in paperbacks, which is about half my budget for paperbacks for the new fiscal year, which started on July 1. At least I know the books will get major use during the summer.
