This is the first of two volumes that brings back the characters of Alex Barnaby, NASCAR mechanic, and Sam Hooker, NASCAR racer, in a new format ... comic book style. Alex has come back to Florida at the request of her friend Rosa, who is concerned that a mutual friend named Felicia has disappeared. After checking out her station at a cigar-making shop, it quickly becomes clear that she has been kidnapped, and all the clues point to someone with voodoo connections.
Barnaby and Hooker are off on their usual quick-paced and humorous escapades where they skirt the law and barely escape danger in the cause of solving the crime. This series is less-well-known that Evanovich's popular Stephanie Plum series, and the graphic format seems to really work well for these characters, which always seemed just a little bit less interesting than those found surrounding Stephanie.
The illustrations are light and eerie, which nicely reflect the humorous style of the storytelling involved for Evanovich and her daughter. The story moves smoothly and quickly, which seems quite appropriate with the plot, which is not as complex as many of the other novels written by Evanovich.
My only complaint is that I would have rather this have been presented in a single volume. I do want to know what is going to happen in the concluding second volume, but I have to wait. This seems unnecessary in a book that took me about an hour to read. I know the decision was made for monetary reasons ... the publisher can get that much more for charging the price for two books rather than the one, but that irks me even more. Anyway, I did really like this and can't wait for volume 2!
