I know that most of you know that I love politics. To me, it is right up there with great television shows. I just love reading about it. I am one of those weird freaks who actually LOVES to watch the debates. Yes ... I even like watching the State of the Union Address.
I know that I have not been doing much posting about the whole election. Heck! I haven't been doing much posting about anything lately. That is another story, but suffice to say that I have serious spread myself WAY FREAKING TOO THIN! Well, I am going to try and get back on the posting wagon because it is a bit of a stress reliever and you are all so supportive.
Anyway ... back to the politics.
Sarah Palin. She is really probably the personality that is getting the most discussion from the four big personalities in the election. She had a big debut with the announcement of her selection as McCain's sidekick (aka Veep). I get why she was selected. She is younger, appeals to the conservative base of the Republican party, and she is a woman. She if full of energy, and she is a really great public speaker. OK ... I admit it, her folksy nature is not very Presidential, but people really connect to her. She is entertaining and she is full of charisma ... more charisma than we have seen in an politician in a while, and that is why she is a good choice. McCain needed someone with that type of draw to combat a similar reaction in those who are interested in Obama.
The argument that she is not ready for the presidency is both a good and a bad one. A lot of veeps have had to step in and take over when the president was no longer able to fulfill his responsibilities. At the same time, we have had some real duds in the number 2 position over the years. It is not exactly a hall of fame position.
Don't get me wrong, I am by no means a fan of the Governor of Alaska. I do respect her for what she has accomplished. I think in our need to vilify the other side, we sometimes forget to give them credit when credit is due. With that said, the fact that she "tolerates" my relationship, saying that homosexual couples should get the same rights as heterosexual couples while making it very clear that she is totally against same-sex marriage and looking like she was going to blow cookies all over the stage while expressing her tolerance is not exactly heart-warming for me. To be honest, she and I disagree on just about every issue.
I don't support her based on her viewpoints on various issues. She is one more reason that I can't vote for McCain, who seems to be less and less the man I had no problem respecting in the past. He really was a maverick that used to be great on bipartisanship, but now he seems to be leaning more and more to the social conservitive, neocon base of the Republicn Party rather than the Roosevelt Republicans that were the strength of the party prior to the second Bush Administration. She really seems to represent everything that makes up the Bush Administration if you really listen to her individual stance on various issues. McCain is not really Bush 2, though he does share a lot of views with the current administration. He also differs on a lot.
We really do have to thank Mrs. Palin for giving us the opportunity to see Tina Fey play her, though!
