The tag-team that brought us the more recent volumes in the Women's Murder Club series presents a whole new title with this book, which focuses on the disturbing world of snuff films. When Kim McDonald, a supermodel doing a shoot in Hawai'i, goes missing, many people assume she has just taken an unscheduled break. Unfortunately, she is really the most recent victim of a man who goes by the name Henri Benoit. Henri has been hired by a group calling themselves the Associates to go around killing young girls, and making snuff films out of the action.
Henri decides to take it to the next level after killing Kim, when he calls her parents to tell them that she is in trouble. They quickly rush out to Hawai'i to help with the search. It is as they are finding the police less than helpful that they meet Ben Hawkins, ex-cop turned crime reporter for the LA Times.
At this point, the novel shifts more to him. This is partly because he is our detective, but also because Henri has set his eyes on Kim's parents and also leaving a trail of bodies in different locations in the Caribbean and Europe.
Ben has also caught Henri's attention, but in a different way. After checking the reporter out, Henri has decided that he wants Ben to ghostwrite his autobiography. If Ben does it well, both he and his girlfriend will get to live.
It comes down to a battle of wills and a race against time as Ben and Henri play a game of chess in which innocent girls and not-so-innocent Associates fall victim to this serial killer. The question is whether Ben should write the book or do what he can to bring him to justice. His decision might just decide whether he and his girlfriend will survive.
I had heard a lot of good things and a lot of bad things about it. To be honest, this is definitely not a book for the soft at heart (or stomach), but then most of Patterson's tales are not. The scenes in which Henri kills the girls are rough with some S&M and some brutal deaths that really are torture. With that said, it was a quick read.
I would say that it was fun, but I am not sure that would be a good thing to say about me! ;)! I really did enjoy it and didn't want to put it down. This is one of the best ones that Patterson has been involved with in some time!
