Super Human by Michael Carroll

Fans of superhero stories will definitely love the Quantum Prophecy series that has been coming out the last few years, and this newest volume is actually a prequel series that introduces a series of teen superhumans that are just coming into their own. A number of the adult superheroes that populate the background will be familiar to those who have read the other books, but you could get by without reading them and start with this newest one.

The world is being hit with a global epidemic. People seem to be suffering from a sever cause of the flu. Interestingly enough, it seems like it is only striking adults. That means all of the well-known heroes are knocked out of the fight before it even begins. Saving the world is going to be a mission that will fall to a group of teens with little-to-know battle experience. They include:
*Abby, a girl with superstrength and speed;
*Roz, the younger sister of a psychic who is a telekinetic;
*Thunder, who has the ability to control sound;
*Lance, a thief with a high level of intelligence.

They are going to be taking on the Helotry, an ancient society that has been working for 4,000 y ears to bring back The Fifth King, a god-like despot who was believed to be the first superhuman. The Fifth King, also known as Krodin, conquered much of the ancient world including Egypt Sumeria, and other well-known kingdoms. Now, his followers are hoping to bring him back in order to rule the world and bring calm to chaos.

Our teenage heroes will have to get a better handle over their talents as well as their need to constantly bicker if they are going to save the world. The fate of their loved ones and all of the adults rest in their hands.

I have really enjoyed reading the previous books written by Carroll. They do a nice job of capturing the excitement of comic book superheroes while being in the full-text format. In some ways, the stories are a lot like the X-Men, Young Avengers or Teen Titans. The series has been an easy sell at work, and I actually had to wait to read the book as it was passed around by a number of the boys before I was able to get my hands on it. It was definitely worth the wait. I am looking forward to more adventures with this new group of teen heroes.
