Right Side of the Wrong Bed by Frederick Smith

Kenny Kane is a thirty-three-year-old African American still recovering from a nasty break-up with a sexy firefighter named DeVon six months ago. A series of paternity suits against DeVon was more than enough to end things between them, but it did not mean that Kenny had lost his feelings for DeVon after six years together.

While Kenny has a successful career as a university administrator, he is still struggling to move on. Things seem to really come to a head when he is invited to a birthday party for his best friend Carlos' boyfriend. It was this boyfriend who introduced Kenny and DeVon, which means that they are probably going to run into each other.

That turns out to not be exactly off target, but Kenny also meets a 21-year-old Latino named Jeremy Lopez at the party. It does not take long for the two of them to find themselves involved, largely because of Jeremy's persistence. Kenny has some concerns that he is robbing the cradle getting with this hip-hop nino.

Things seem to take a turn for the worst as Jeremy turns out to not be quite the windfall that Kenny is hoping for. Besides concerns about drinking and drugs, there are clues that Jeremy does not always stay on the right side of the law. This seems to really come to ahead when the two of them attend a fraternity party at a house Jeremy has ties to. Things go terribly wrong when the police raid the party and one of the attendees ends up dying while having fun in the Crib of Evil, where Jeremy was hanging out.

Kenny finds himself in a difficult situation when he is given the assignment of looking into the situation for the university since the young man who died was a student at his school. Besides the obvious concerns about drugs and underage drinking, many suspect that the death was related to hazing.

Kenny doesn't want to see the trouble he seems to be getting into even as his friends, students, and family all highlight what a bad guy Jeremy is. He even seems to believe that, but his willingness to accept the negativity crumbles when he is with Jeremy who knows all the right things to say. The question is whether Kenny will see the light before things get worse. Is it possible the Jeremy can get on the straight and narrow?

I was really pulled into the story. I so wanted to strangle Jeremy and knock him to the curb and try to shake some sense into Kenny. I couldn't understand why he would keep taking the little punk, who was clearly full of crap, back. He was such a strong and successful guy with everything going for him. I could not see why he would feel so low that he would have to put up with this crap.

The ending definitely hits the reader like a ton of bricks with surprise. It ties things up quickly. At first, I hated it, thinking the author took the easy way out to find and easy resolution to the difficult situation he created. After thinking about it for a while, I think that he opted for what is a pretty realistic ending.

Surprise ending? I like stories like that...as long as I can understand them!

I've found one book of his in our local library catalogue... so I've reserved it... forget the title.
