Prince Caspian - a Movie Review

I was not really sure what to expect with this one. Most people are familiar with the first book in the series The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, but the other books are a little less well-known. All of the books are pretty short and filled with lots of illustrations. I thought Disney did a really nice job with the first volume, and was looking forward to Prince Caspian.

The four siblings that took center stage in the first film have returned to their everyday lives in war-torn England. A year has passed since their earlier adventures, and they are called back to Narnia at one of it's biggest times of need. In Narnia, 1300 years have passed, and the magical creatures have been hunted almost to extinction by the humans of their world. The kingdom is now ruled by a horrible regent named Miraz, who has been caring for the kingdom after the death of the king. Now that the regent's wife has given birth to a son, Miraz has no qualms with hunting down and killing the crown prince, Caspian.

Caspian uses the horn of Queen Susan to call forth our heroes as he flees into the safety of the Narnian forests. It is there that he runs into the survivors among the magical creatures. After some confusion, the Narnians (and the returning kings and queens of old) decide to assist Caspian in his attempt to regain his rightful seat on the thrown. This leads to lots of action.

Ray commented on the similarity to The Lord of the Rings series, which is probably not all that surprising since the C.S Lewis, the creator of The Chronicles of Narnia was pretty good friends with J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of LOTR.

I would warn that this movie has revved up the level of violence from the first film. It is not terribly graphic, but it definitely makes the movie more appropriate for older viewers. That is a bit sad since the books are really written for those in 2nd to 4th grade. It does make it for a more epic film, though.

Believe it or not I saw the first one and liked it but this sequel held no interest for me--might give it a look when it is on TV.
