The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan

Percy Jackson and his friends are back for their final adventure. It is up to them and the rest of the half-bloods to save the day as the Titans, under the leadership of the evil Kronos, have set their eyes on destroying Mount Olympus, which is now on the 600th floor of the Empire State Building in New York, and the gods who have ruled from their for centuries.

It is the time in which Percy will finally have to face what prophecy has said will happen for him. He will make the final decision that will either save or destroy the world.

The titan Typhon has escaped from underneath Mt. St. Helens and is wreaking havoc as he travels across the country to reach New York. All of the major gods are going head-on with him and not doing all that well. The two exceptions are Poseidon, Percy's dad who is faced with fighting a whole front of the war in his undersea kingdom, and Hades, who has opted out of the battle because he has felt snubbed by his siblings in the past.

Percy is joined by his hearty friends Annabeth, the brave and bright daughter of Athena; Rachel Dare, his girlfriend with mysterious powers of her own; Grover, the young satyr coming into his own; and Nico, the outcast son of Hades. They along with the other nature spirits and the campers from Camp Half Blood are all that stand in the way of the monsters and titans under Kronos' command as Manhattan starts to fall.

This is truly a great finale in the series, which is filled with adventure and humor that children of all ages can relate to. I couldn't find the time to read this one fast enough as I wanted to see how everything would play out.

What is even better, the novel was marketed as being the last of the tales for Percy, but it concludes in a way that definitely leaves it open for other half-bloods to step forward and take on the mantel of hero, both literally and as a literary device.
