Oh Happy Day - a Movie Review

This British import premiered on the Logo Network on Sunday night. It is one of the first true romantic comedy that I have seen centering around gay men without having political or health issues popping into the story. It is about two guys meeting, falling in love, almost losing it all, and ... you know, the usuall happy ending.

The story centers around Jonathan, a black man living in London who is just on the cusp of making it big in the advertising business. He has big hopes of getting an award for some of his works. This is highlighted as the whole movie starts off with him attending the annual awards ceremony. He learns from his boss that evening that he is going to get his first opportunity to lead a team on a major advertising account.

That evening, he also meets David, an interesting and sexy American that he finds quite an interest in. So much so that the two of them end up spending the evening together even after an awkward moment in the men's room highlighting Jonathan's trouble with being pee shy. They awake to find Jonathan's daughter Poppy having arrived at Jonathan's apartment. Poppy is Jonathan's daughter with his best friend.

Things become a little awkward when Jonathan goes into work on Monday to meet the new client and learns that David has been brought in from America by the client to help with the marketting plan for a new drug that will help keep people feeling up. Jonathan and his team are supposed to come up with a snazzy name for the pill, build an initial commercial, and kick off a marketing plan. The fact that David is a client not only is awkward, but it also threatens Jonathan's job because of a policy at the firm. Jonathan, who is (shall we say) focused on his career, places some real roadblocks in their romantic relationship. A trip to Sussex for business, and getting trapped there, provide these guys with a chance to reconnect a bit after some bitterness, but will it be enough for Jonathan to decide that his career sometimes needs to take a backseat to love?

This movie was really an interesting movie. It was refreshing to see a movie where the characters were gay, but that was not by any means an issue. It was about the ups and downs of their relationship. A lot of the secondary characters, particularly Jonathan's mother and "aunt" and his best friend's fiance, are totally hysterical. They offset some of the more serious moments while also helping to move along the plotline.

The funny thing is that I see a bit of myself in Jonathan, though I hope I have David's really good sense of humor and the ability to just lay back and have some fun. I am usually the clown of the party.

I actually liked this one enough that I am considering buying it.

Hey, this sounds pretty darn good! I'd love to be able to see it. I was looking through the comments, too, and I agree with brian about "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert"...that was a very good movie.
