The funniest thing happened to me last night. I was online as usual. This time, I was talking/chatting with a good friend of mine who lives in Michigan. It was sometime around 11:00 pm and the power seemed to go out. The lights were gone, the air conditioner stopped, and the poor fish in the tank were left without their aerator and their filter. My laptop kept on going, but that was not a big surprise because it was just running off the battery.
What did surprise me is that my connection to the Internet stayed intact. At first, I thought it was because the hub that maintains our connection to the Internet and the phone lines will continue to run for a short while on battery power as well. My previous experience was that the Internet went down, but I thought my memory of things was off.
Anyway, I continued talking with my friend for a little while as I posted an alert on Facebook for an event the local library is hosting on Saturday night. Once the latter was accomplished, I told my friend that I should probably run before the batteries for the hub went down and he lost me.
What is really sad is that as I was shutting down the laptop and packing up for the night, I noticed something. There was some light coming through one of the windows in the spare bedroom. It was coming from a street late. It took a couple of seconds, but I ended up realizing that we hadn't actually lost power.
For some reason, the circuit for the living room had tripped. It was something that was quickly resolved by going into the master bedroom where the second floor circuit break is and resetting. I felt quite silly. At least I didn't have to stay up really late waiting for the power to come on to fix the alarm clock when the power came back on.
