This quick-paced and short novel presents the tale of three girls attending an urban high school as events lead up to a major fight that will change each of them.
Trina is talented in the arts and seems to find some bright moments in life. She takes great care in trying to bring beauty into the world around her through her talent and through her choices in dress.
Dominique is a girl who has a gift on the basketball court, but her low grades prevent her from being able to play. She is frustrated by the fact that she knows she could help her team win if the coach would just put her in. When she has a little bit of a run in with the perky Trina, Dominique swears to beat her up later in the week.
Our third protagonist, Leticia, overhears the threat. While she knows she should probably warn Trina, Leticia is so caught up in the excitement about the approaching fight and sharing the news with her friends that she is torn about whether or not to say something.
Each of the three characters have really strong and realistic voices. It his hard for the reader not to feel for them even if he or she is unable to understand the choices and actions they make. I actually read the book in one sitting because I didn't want to put it down.
