This is probably a movie that I should have watched a while ago. The younger teens are addicted to it. It centers around two characters, star-basketball-player Troy Bolton and a math whiz named Gabriella Montez. They meet on vacation over the summer only to reconnect at the start of the school year when Gabriella transfers to Troy's school. In their first meeting, they stun everything with their singing skills as they do an impromptu duet in a karaoke contest.
The school is gearing up for its annual musical, and the brother and sister Reed team figure they have the usual guarantee at the starring roles. That does not stop Gabriella and Troy from giving it a try. This turns the whole social strata of the school on end because the kids start to realize that it is OK to have interests outside their stereotypical cliques.
From there on, the story follows the usual stereotypical feel-good movie for teens. The corniness provides a bit of comfort that teens secretly like even though they will probably deny it. In fact, I think a lot of adults also find comfort in it. That is probably why this movie has become such a success.
The musical would definitely be considered "bubble gum" music, but the tunes are catchy. It is just a light fun set of tunes and a show full of pretty elaborate dance routines.
What I think is great, is that the overall message of the film is a positive one. It is anti-bullying, anti-clique, and very positive on individuality, inclusiveness, and not being afraid to rise to your potential. As a result, I am thrilled that the kids are signing up to this.
