Hello, Dolly

Last night, my former intern/coworker/student went to the high school in the town that I work in to see the school play. A number of the kids that come into the after-school center that we cover in the afternoons were in the play. They had asked us to come and see the play. It was something that we really felt we should do.

After we got off shift, we went out for dinner. It was a quick salad and quesadilla before we were off to the school for what turned out to be a wonderful play. The girl who played Dolly had a voice and enough stage presence that it was hard to believe she was just a high school student. I could actually imagine her being on a professional stage.

All of the kids were great. It was actually pretty amazing to see. I remember a lot of these kids being little and coming to various programs. Now they were all dressed up in period costume and throwing out tunes like adults. It was just incredible.

After the play, the cast stood in the hallway so the peopl ein the audience were able to great them and talk to them. We took some time to do so. I actually almost got bowled over by one of the girls. She screamed out my name and rushed over to give me a hug, almost knocking me over in the process. My "date" for the evening got a real kick out of it. It is amazing how I get to connect with some of the kids. I had a little clutch of them around me trying to figure out if I liked the show.

On a weird side story, we figured we really threw the kids for a loop. Some of them have been trying to hook the two of us up since she started as my intern last September. It is odd since I am gay, and she is a lesbian. In fact, since she and her love are from Massachusetts, they are even married. We have told the kids that it was never going to happen for the obvious reasons, but they keep trying because they think we make a cute couple.

The toughest part is that I didn't get home until 10:30pm. Ray had already gone off to dreamland by then. It is not actually a late night for me, but it was a long day of work-related stuff. I am really glad that I got to go.

People think I am crazy--I love to see school productions--they put their all into it and, good or bad, you get the joy of just seeing them doing something they love to do--and I love to watch the adults in the audience (family or not)and their reactions.
Glad you had a great evening--see you don't have to go out all night to a bar and drink to have fun!!!
So when are you going to have her and her partner over for dinner??? Or to play cards??? I'm not giving up on that!!!
