I ended up getting this one after Martin pointed out that it was made by the same guy who wrote and produced Shortbus It is a musical centering around a transexual named Hedwig, who was born in Berlin in 1961, the year the wall was built. As a young boy Hedwig face a terrible childhood filled with abuse. As a result, he ends up getting a sex change opperation that goes wrong. This does not stop her from trying to make the best of her life as it progresses. She falls in love with a black military officers, and ends up finding herself with a touring band that seems to tour only seedy bars.
Her career with the band really kicks off after she falls in love with a young man and teaches him all he needs to know to make it big. The problem is that he leaves Hedwig behind since the idea of being with her would hurt his pop star image. Hedwig, who feels jilted, finds herself filled with hate and seeks vengence on her ex's successful career. She also starts a relationship with a drag king in her band.
While the movie is a well-made indie flick, I can't say that I really got it. I did feel moved, but I only finished it because it was recommended by Martin. It is probably a very good movie, but definitely not my cup of tea.
