TenNapel's latest graphic novel provides an interesting look at death and ghosthunting. Garth Hale is a young teen dealing with the fact tha the has a terminal illness. His mother has brought him to a number of doctors, but none of them have been able to offer him anything more than the usual diagnosis. Things really starts to get interesting when he has a run in with Frank Gallows, a ghosthunter for the Supernatural Immigration Task Force.
Gallows is initially on the hunt to capture Benedict Arnold, who is hiding under a bed before Gallows sends him back to the other side. Immediately after, Gallows finds himself tracking a skeleton-like ghost of a horse. Just as he nabs the horse and transfers it back to the afterlife, he mistakenly captures Garth in the transport wave.
When Garth finds himself in the spectral countryside near Ghostopolis, he finds that the horse-spirit is willing to be friends. Garth dubs it Skinny, and the two make their way toward the city. Along the way, they meet Cecil, Garth's grandfather who has been estranged from the family for decades. Cecil appears to be the same age as Garth in the afterlife.
As all of this is going on, Gallows is working with his ex-girlfriend, the spirit Claire Voyant to go after Garth in Ghostopolis. Once they are able to get there, they work with Cecil, Garth, and Skinny to take on Vaugner, the evil ruler of Ghostopolis who has used the division between the ghost kingdoms to rule the afterlife. It will be up to Garth, Gallows, and the gang to see if they can set things right both in the afterlife ... and life.
This is a really fun read full of adventure and lots of humor. As you can see from the names, a lot of that humor is tied to punnery, wordplay, and irony. There is a good level of action, and the graphics work well with the feel of the storyline, creating a good pacing for the reader. This is an easy sell for teens and tweens. It is a strong example of a graphic novel.
