Charlotte is settling into the afterlife after the events of Ghostgirl, where she choked to death on a gummy bear. She ended up sharing a body with Scarlett, the goth younger sister of the most popular girl in school. She and Scarlett became very good friends, but Charlotte had to move on. Now, she must spend most of her days answering the phones at a hotline for troubled teens. Basically, she gets to be teens internal voice or conscience as they deal with the challenges of life.
Unfortunately, the problem is that her phone never seems to ring. Her friends from Dead Ed all have busy phone lines, but she is left feeling like an outsider. Things change as she gets to know Maddy better. Maddy seems to take her under her wing and the two become friends.
Scarlett's life is also facing its own challenges as her older, popular sister Petula ends up in a coma after developing an infection from a cut she receives on her big toe during a pedicure. Scarlett believes that part of the problem is that her soul has gone missing, and Petula won't come out of her coma until her soul has returns. Fortunately for Scarlett, her previous experiences with Charlotte helped her learn how to send her soul out on journeys. She goes looking for Charlotte in the realm of the dead with the hopes that Charlotte will be able to help her recover her sister.
As with the earlier novel, their is no shortage of humor, of the dark variety. I did feel like the story was a little forced whole the earlier book flowed very nicely. This story feels more contrived and forced rather than having a strong plot of its own. There is personal growth for a number of characters and people (both dead and living) prove they are not always what they seem as first glance. It is a fun read, though, the previous novel should be read first. There are hints at the end that a third book may be forthcoming.
