I headed back to work today. My vacation is over, and I feel all rested and ready to face the onslaught that is the summer reading program!
I got a chance to work on some of the hand outs and printed materials the participants get. I am starting to feel that all of the little details are falling into place, which is a good thing.
We had a little bit of a bump in the road. There was some sort of upgrade on the library network's catalog. As a result, people couldn't place hold on items they wanted at the usual URL for the catalog. There is an alternate access point, and everything had to be changed so that people could do that. Since our IT person and the director are on vacation this week, it meant that exciting little project fell to me. After getting the necessary passwords, I was able to go around to all of the reserved machines and change the homepage to the correct URL. I also updated the library's homepage and the template for the website to make it work. It was not a hard project, but it was also not something I really wanted to work on since I have a lot to get done.
On a scary note, my desk is starting to be overwhelmed. I don't have an office, and I am not sure I would say I have a desk. It is a former computer unit I was able to commandeer due to the removal of dummy terminals for our cataloging system. Anyway, it is now overflowing with various things:
*a papermaking kit I planned to use for a program
*a bunch of donations I need to look at to decide about whether to keep
*some books that I have to put into storage since I keep them for giveaways among the YA librarians in the state
*some newly arrived books that need to be cataloged
*book lists that are ready to be turned into annotated bibliographies to help people find items they might want to read
*professional journals and book review materials I need to go through to set up my final book orders for the fiscal year
You get the idea! What is rough is that it is in a public service area so I am guessing that it is only a matter of time before the bosses freak out a bit. It would be nice to have a space "off the floor" so I would have an easier time organizing my things and I could hide the mess, but alas, there seems to be no possibility for that.
Hopefully, I can squeeze some time in tomorrow to sort through the mess. I promise that I am not making a mountain out of a molehill! It really is overflowing.
